Questions About Data Recovery

How long does it take to evaluate my situation?

A typical evaluation takes no more than 1 business day.  If it will take longer, we will call you to let you know why.

How much money does data recovery cost?

Data recovery has a wide range of prices because each situation is different. Our evaluation is free and most of our successful recoveries cost between $120 to $360.  A data recovery lab will cost more at roughly $500 to $1500 for a 1 TB hard drive.  This is due to specialized equipment, proprietary software, and highly educated engineers.

What does a clicking hard drive mean?

A hard drive may make a clicking sound when there is a read/write head failure. The armature that holds the read/write heads makes the sound when it slams back and forth looking for data.  If your drive is clicking, please turn it off and do not apply power to the drive anymore as the heads may scratch the data storing platters/disks.  This could make the recovery very difficult or not even possible.

Do you send your data recovery situations to a 3rd party?

Many so called “data recovery labs” send their work to another lab and act as if they were doing it. This middle man approach is not what we do. We evaluate the situation here and if we feel that we can not recover it using our techniques, we want you to work directly with Gillware Data Recovery.

What softwares can I use to recover data myself?

In some situations, such as reformat or deletions, you can find software that may be able to revive your lost data. However if you are unfamiliar with data structures and how these softwares work, we strongly advise finding an experienced IT company or data recovery lab with a great reputation.  Most reputable companies offer risk free evaluations so there is little cost involved in finding out if the data is recoverable.

SHOULD I OPEN MY HARD DRIVE?

If you want the data recovered, do NOT open the hard drive.  Dust and debris in the air can cause severe damage to the drive and may render it unrecoverable.  The coating on the platters/disks that store data is extremely fragile.  Data recovery companies have clean rooms, clean benches, and special machines to ensure those platters remain intact and readable.

How far does PC-Protechs go in the data recovery process?

We have a very specific process that allows us to know exactly what we can do and when we should stop and refer to a lab. We will always use extreme caution as we do not want to further damage the storage device. No device is left unsupervised in the data recovery process. We also do not make inexpensive and dangerous hardware repair attempts.

How Do I get my data back after it is recovered?

There are multiple ways for us to return your data to you.  For file recovery, we can put the recovered data on a USB thumb drive or external hard drive. If the device is for a computer or laptop, we may be able to clone it to a new drive and make software repairs so it would appear as if nothing has changed. The clone would have to be close to to perfect for this to work. We have more options available as needed.
